President Donald Trump recently announced new restrictions to Cuba, and also called for the return of Tupac Shakur’s godmother, Assata Shakur, who has been living in the country to escape persecution in the U.S.
Trump spoke on Friday (June 16) in Miami, outlining his plan to reverse any progress the Obama administration made to make peace and open talks with the country.
“To the Cuban government, I say put an end to the abuse of distance,” Trump said. “Release the political prisoners. Stop jailing innocent people. Open yourselves to political and economic freedoms. Return the fugitives from American justice including the return of the cop killer Joanne Chesimard.”
Chesimard, aka Assata Shakur, was convicted in the death of New Jersey Trooper Werner Foerster in 1977 after he was killed during a gunfight during a traffic stop in 1973. She was sentenced to life in prison, but escaped and was granted asylum by then Cuban leader Fidel Castro.
