IamSu has been putting on for his area for quite awhile now, establishing a crazy following in the bay which has expanded far beyond just his home state.
Today the bay area native, joins me for a quick discussion about his HBK gang, working with Jonn Hart and Problem. In addition, he reveals how long he has been making music, and how he originally came around it. Su also touches down on a couple other topics including on that he says, “People didn’t take us serous at one point…”
We met at the Jonn Hart, Who Booty video shoot a couple weeks ago. How did you and Jonn go about linking up for the track?
“Dj Amen put the whole track together for me to get on it with Jonn, but we’ve worked together before on the Like My Bass remix.”
The idea behind the video is Jonn spends the day looking for whose booty from the night before. You’re the man behind HBK (Heartbreak Gang), with all these women around, what is the lift style of the HBK gang?
“To be honest the lifestyle of the gang is making music eating chinese food & having dumbass fun.”
Who are the members behind your crew?
“Razor ramon, all three mick foley characters, the entire degeneration x, kool john & beef.”
I remember we were talking, and you told me about your project you have coming up with Problem. What can you tell me about that?
“Me & Problem got hella cool after the Function record and just started recording heavy and it all came together.”
You’ve really exploded onto the scene the past year or so… How long have you been at music? Where does it originate for you?
“Since I was 15 I been making music, music been in my family forever so thats pretty much how it originated for me.”
You said, “Heartbreakers brought the bay back, n*ggas thought I was playing every time I used to say that.” Elaborate on what you mean behind that statement?
“People didn’t take us serious at one point, I think its pretty self explanatory I put on for the bay area in every rap.”
Speaking on the bay, your stomping grounds, what do you think of the music scene in the bay today?
“I love it.”
You’ve been on the go recently, stops in San Diego, Los Angeles, and everywhere in between. What have you been lining up for the future?
“I got a busy schedule all around California, and I’ll be in Atlanta later this month.”
With music, specifically hiphop, in a state of such acceptance. What are some values newer artist(s) should have to make their entrance into the industry?
“Standard patience, humble, staying true to yourself; building a solid team; and staying diligent… Yee!”
Anything else you want to throw out there?
“Check out Hbkgang.com for everything also soundcloud.com/thehbkgang ; Suzy 6speed is dropping before the end of the year; follow my Twitter @IAMSU; gang merchandise is on the way look out for that as well.”
